Haiti – Fueling Their Futures: Ice Cream Social

A Fundraiser to Support the Children of Haiti

Written by Fr. William Kaliyadan, MS

On August 16th, Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster, MA—served by the Missionaries of La Salette, Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas (MMA) —hosted its annual Ice Cream Social fundraiser for the Together with Haiti (TWH) ministry. For more than 38 years, TWH has been a lifeline of support for our sisters and brothers in St. Claire’s Parish in Dessalines and the La Salette missions in rural Bayonnais and Haute Feuille, Haiti.
Parishioners gather in a fun, family-friendly setting while watching videos from Haiti, reminding us of the faces and lives touched by our generosity. It’s a chance to share joy locally while fueling futures abroad.

Shared Mission: Parish and Province Together

This sweet summer tradition is about more than toppings and flavors—it’s about hope. It reflects something deeper: the collaboration between Our Lady of the Cape Parish (OLC) and the Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas (MMA) of the Missionaries of La Salette. Together, we share the responsibility of supporting Haiti’s La Salette missions. Parishioners contribute energy, creativity, and fundraising efforts, along with financial support for various projects and needs, while the MMA Province provides the annual financial commitment to Haiti—funding priests, covering routine expenses for ministry, seminarians’ formation, and essential projects.

Each year, the MMA Province and the OLC Parish contribute over $300,000 to Haiti, supporting:

  • Four priests and four seminarians are in their ministry and formation.
  • Four parishes and five schools, where more than 3,300 children are educated and nourished.
  • Support of a trade school and a dispensary.
  • Projects that include school lunches, clean water programs, teacher training, and medical aid.

This partnership ensures that the children of Haiti not only receive daily food but also opportunities for education, faith formation, medical assistance, and a brighter future.

The Impact of Your Support

Thanks to last year’s generosity, TWH and MMA together:

  • Provided a generator, solar panels, wall fans, computers, books, and teacher salaries at St. Claire’s schools.
  • Supported seminarians and priests.
  • Supplied Haiti’s infirmary with equipment and medical supplies.
  • Funded hot meals, uniforms, school supplies, and summer camps at Fr. Mami’s school in Bayonnais.
  • Assisted Fr. Maximin’s missions in Haute Feuille and Haute Chevreau with teacher training, supplies, and salaries for aides.

Why It Matters Now

Haiti is facing severe hardship—violence, shortages, and rising costs. Yet, through your help, nearly 3,300 students from preschool to high school receive a nutritious hot meal every day through our canteen program. That one daily meal means children can focus on learning instead of hunger. Add to this clean water initiatives, uniforms, books, and teacher training—and every gift fuels real transformation.

  • $25 provides a child with a school uniform.
  • $100 buys a year’s worth of books for a classroom.
  • $200 Support the hot meal program
  • $500 sponsor the formation of a seminarian
  • Every dollar ensures food, education, and hope.
