Peter’s Tears and Mary’s Tears

Palm Sunday

La Salette Laity Reflection by The Laity of Friendswood

Jesus says to Peter, “Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.”
Peter responds confidently, “I will not deny you.”

How many times have we made similar promises to our Lord?
“I’ll get up earlier to pray.”
“I’ll attend an extra day of Mass.”
“I’ll catch up on Father Mike Schmitz’s Bible in a Year podcast,” even though we are weeks behind.

In Matthew 26:41, Jesus reminds us, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” When Peter heard the cock crow, Scripture tells us he wept bitterly. His tears reveal a heart that truly loved the Lord. His failure led not to indifference, but to repentance.

The Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette echoes this sorrow. Our Blessed Mother also wept bitterly. Her message was clear: “I gave you six days to work; I kept the seventh for myself, and no one will give it to me.” Her tears were not condemnation, but a grieving love that longs for her children to return to God.

We spend countless hours on our phones, at work, and watching sports, yet the true guide for our lives is found in Sacred Scripture. Lent invites us to reframe our priorities and place Jesus once again at the center.

We can use the tools already in our hands:
use our phones to learn about the life of Jesus.
Set an alarm for morning prayer.
Download faith-filled apps like Laudate, Ascension Press, or FORMED.

My hope is simple: that when you look back twelve months from now, you will rejoice in the peace that comes from truly knowing Christ.
