We Would Love
to Keep in Touch!

The La Salette mission in Myanmar is genuinely linked to those original La Salette Missionaries who They traveled west in 1937 and encountered war and so many challenges in their early years. With newer significant events which have happened in our country, I sincerely offer these thoughts as an update.

A Coup D'état, Covid-19 and our mission in Myanmar

In reality, the "Coup d'état" seized power on 1 February 2021. It’s been for more than a year by this time. In parallel to this event of the tragedy caused much violence with many lives into death rates, the Covid-19 happened at the same time until now as we knew in the global alarming - death tools raised in significant numbers in the world also. In Myanmar, our changing political situation and Covid-19 have added to our life’s burdens. Covid alone brought more than 2,000 deaths within only three months.

John Paul Lwel from St. Therese Little Way Missionary Institute were arrested by the military junta in Myanmar on Feb. 21, 2022. Since the Covid-19 outbreak in March 2019, our mission activities were forced to close by the declaration of our Health and Sports department. Thus, our pastoral activities were prohibited throughout the year. Unfortunately, it's difficult or predict our future situation, as we, together with our fellow country-men, experience the same emotions as a Church and country.
Thus, together with other priests and Religious, Fr. Nico had to leave Loikaw behind and take shelter at the nearby diocese. He is helping the displaced peoples whatever good in pastoral care while being at a safe place. We cannot predict the situations for everyday situations, and it somewhat shows significantly in the state of uncertainties in our country.

About Our Myanmar Community Today

Our mission in Myanmar is composed of these numbers in the community: (15) priests and (5) professed members. There are (3) professed brothers who are about to take perpetual vows in this year (2022) and ordinations by God's grace, pending the approval of the General Administration.

Aware of our present situation and its uncertainties, and myself being the leader of the Myanmar La Salette community, I feel that, like Popes St. John XXIII, St. Paul VI, and Pope St. John Paul lI, we must go out to all nations, as Mary urged at La Salette.

Beginning this year of 2022, with the approval of the General Admiration, we have decided to share some of our members from the Myanmar Region with other La Salette Provinces. These newly missioned members include:

  • Fr. Anthony Maung, M.S., is going to Tanzania after processing his documents.
  • Fr. Bernie Taylor, M.S., is going on mission to the Philippine Province.
  • Fr. Robert Zaw Lwin, M.S., is on assignment in the American Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas in St. Ann’s Parish in Marietta, GA.

Keeping in mind the courageous spirit of the La Salette Missionaries who set in Burma way back in 1937s, we are ready and willing to do what needs to be done in this day and age under the intercession of our Lady of La Salette.

May God bless us always and Our Lady protect us from evil and all dangers. And may our loving God bless and have mercy on the people of Myanmar! Amen!
